Nonsuch Meadow, Sudbury, Suffolk
An estate of houses built at densities of 50/hectare in 1988. The dense layout was achieved by treating the access road as shared space.
This project has remained largely unaltered by the residents - a true testament to its appropriateness. Internal layouts are generally open plan on the ground floors, with predominantly south facing gardens for passive solar gain. Construction standards were so far ahead of the requirements at the time that even now they still perform well.
