Reas Yard Rae's Yard, BURY ST EDMUNDS  for the Bury Town Trust

Bury Town Trust aims to rescue derelict buildings, bringing them back into use and selling them on to provide a rolling fund for future development.

The development consists of 3 historic buildings fronting Risbygate Street, and a terrace of 4 new houses at the rear of the site.  The 3 frontage buildings contain shops on the ground floor and flats above.

This was the first major development to use hemp and lime for the renovation of the historic timber framed buildings.  Lime render, limewashed oak windows and natural clay plain tiles unify the development.

Restoration of this kind can reduce the environmental footprint of buildings, and the users all agree that the timber frame add a special quality to the interiors of the buildings.

The new houses at the rear of the site have south facing gardens for passive solar gain, brickwork laid in pure lime mortar with no cement, limewashed oak cladding and oak windows, none of which require maintenance.  Use of the roof space as an additional bedroom and shower room ensures generous spaces in an otherwise tight urban context.

No car parking is provided on site.  There is a public car park immediately behind the site.
