Reed beds can offer a natural alternative to standard sewage treatment systems. They are completely natural, low cost, and easy to maintain, providing natural habitat for wetland species.
The sewage is drained to a collecting chamber where the solids settle to the bottom, and liquid which represents 97% of the total volume is flushed over the reed bed, allowing the roots to oxygenate the water and purify it to the point where it can be discharged safely, or used for irrigation.
