Heath House

NPPF 84 residence in Suffolk

In progress

Nestled within the picturesque Wilford Peninsula, our proposed NPPF 84 residential dwelling is designed to integrate into the natural beauty of the Suffolk landscape and, particularly, its picturesque surrounding heathland.

The proposal is fundamentally focused on the recreation of landscapes that historically inhabited the site and that still surround the site. The architecture responds and is intrinsically linked to this natural context, recreated and existing.

The key landscapes, the heathlands, form patchworks of flora interwoven by a web of exposed earth fauna tracks. Its unique architectural form identifies and responds to this and emerges organically from its context, as if born from the landscape itself. The building is extruded from the worn paths, minimising the visual impact and creating a harmonious blend between the built and natural environments. The building, consisting of two primary blocks and rooms with central furnishings represents the patchwork mosaic of flora in a heath.

The building incorporates innovative features that enhance both sustainability and aesthetics, such as rammed earth construction and renewable energy sources. Its material palette showcases how each of the site’s surrounding habitats, fringe environments, and themes come together to determine an architectural language of the landscape.

Rammed earth walls, subtly reference the variance of soil from wet heath to dry heath in their tone and choice of earth used from the site. Limecrete floors follow the walls, while softer islands of human life inhabit the centre of spaces. Transitional spaces, allowing view and passage in and out of the building, are glass and timber with a light lime wash.

Through time, the surrounding natural habitat will begin to populate the building, becoming bonded to the site and allowing it to thrive.

This project represents a sustainable and innovative approach to a residential proposal that dialogues with its context and community. By prioritizing ecological restoration, incorporating biophilic design principles, and using innovative materials, the building creates a truly exceptional living experience that also benefits its surrounding natural habitats and local community.

Earlier in 2024, the Suffolk Design Review Panel positively endorsed our proposal, recognising its alignment with the area's character and ecological significance. We will soon apply for planning permission.
