Bungay Library Extension

New extension and entrance to the existing library building

Bungay, Suffolk

Contractor: Sprake & Tyrell

Structural Engineers : J P Chick & Partners

We are delighted to have completed a transformation of the foyer at the Bungay Community Library, which officially opened in early May 2025.

This project has delivered a significantly enhanced and more accessible entrance space for the community, where the existing foyer was tired, worn, and constantly brought in a cold draught.

Working collaboratively with Bungay Library and local builders Sprake and Tyrell, our design focused on creating a welcoming and functional area. The new foyer features automatic doors, providing improved access for older or disabled customers and those with prams. The sheltered canopy area offers practical 'parking' for prams, allowing for a more spacious interior.

The design also includes a dedicated storage solution for chairs, folding tables, and other equipment, making it easier for the library to host a wider range of events.

As with all our projects, sustainability was a key consideration, so we made much-needed insulation improvements and energy-saving lighting to enhance the library's energy efficiency. The window design offers a better visual connection to the library's garden upon entrance, an attractive and accessible green space for all users to enjoy.

This project was made possible through funding from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) via East Suffolk Council, generous fundraising by The Friends of Bungay Library with support from local charities, and contributions from Suffolk County Council.

We congratulate everyone involved on the successful completion of the project and are proud to have played a role in creating this improved and welcoming space for the Bungay community.

Before & after plan

“The new library foyer has transformed the library experience for customers and staff alike. The new space is purpose-built and works exactly in the way we need it to. The automatic doors have been appreciated by all customers, and the additional storage cupboard has provided much-needed space and allowed organisation and easy access to the many items we provide.

We have also found that the whole building is warmer and easier to heat due to the changes to the layout and insulation properties of the new build.”

-   Amanda King, Executive Library Manager for Bungay Community Library

“We were delighted to support the improvements at Bungay Community Library. These upgrades have made the space more accessible and introduced fantastic new facilities that benefit the entire community. It’s been wonderful to see this project come to fruition and deliver such positive outcomes for local residents.”
